Swimming is my favorite sport. It has been ever since I started swimming in 5th grade, and chances are that it always will be. It's a sport where you can get awesome exercise while you have a good time with your friends. It doesn't matter how old you are, you can still swim. In fact, there are people over 80 years old who still swim competitively. If you're naturally athletic, you can try a sport for the first time and be amazing at it. It's not like that in swimming, you have to work very hard to be good. The water is such an alien environment to the human body that you simply can't just get into the water and be amazing. I've been working very hard in swimming lately, and I have seen it pay off. In fact, my goal is to take the school record in the 100 yard freestyle and then to go on and swim in college, possibly at Gustavus Adolphus. Swimmers have the highest rate of graduating from college out of all the different athletes from the assortment of college sports. Considering everything that the sport of swimming has going for it, it is a shame that it doesn't get more credit than the small recognition that it gets in the realm of high school sports.

Friendship
Friendship is essential to your making it through high school. Friends are people you can identify with and share your feelings with. High school can be an emotionally tough time, and without anyone to identify with, you can become very sad. A true friend is someone who you can always count on, who will never exclude you, and you can always tell them the whole truth about how you're feeling. There are times when I feel really down, and my friends can really help me to feel better. Sometimes it can be really hard when you start slipping away from from someone who was your best friend. It hurts, and sometimes you start to hang out with that friend and you get back to where you used to be; other times you just sort of lose that friend, which can be one of the hardest things of all. Regardless of your situation, your friends will be one of the most valuable things that you have.

No hats in school?!
Last year, I was eating lunch with my friends and one of them happened to be wearing an Albert Lea hockey stocking cap. When the lunch lady walked by our table and saw this, she promptly told him to take it off. I think that is just ridiculous. I mean, he was showing his support for his school and his team by wearing that hat. I understand the school policy about wearing hats, and that it is designed to prevent gang violence. So from what I would imagine, whoever wrote the policy had bandanas and solid color caps in mind, not school sports hats! Wearing a hat that says albert lea hockey is really no different from wearing a t-shirt that says albert lea hockey, and I've never heard of anyone starting a fight with someone because they were wearing a t-shirt that said albert lea hockey or any other sport on it for that matter. So in my opinion, I think the albert lea high school should seriously reconsider this policy pertaining to school sports related headwear.
